How to delete your Amazon account

Deleting your Amazon account is easy, and it will only take 5 min of your time!
Here are all the steps you'll need.

  1.  Log in to your account.
  2. Hover over your profile name in the right hand corner and select "Your Account" from the drop-down-menu.
  3. Scroll down to find the box marked "Manage your data" and click "Close your Amazon account".
  4. Scroll past their desperate attempt to get you to stay, and check the box confirming you want to delete the account as well as your data and press "Close my account".
  5. Confirm the closure vie e-mail or text. For this step you will be directed by Amazon.

Once you have received the e-mail confirming your account has been successfully deleted, go back to the main page, to click on the watering can and water our plant.

If you want to take part in the give-away, please take a screenshot of it showing the account number (we will need to check we don't get the same screenshot more than once) and upload it to our form here.

PLEASE NOTE: During the process, Amazon will show you a list of the benefits and services you will lose by deleting your account. We admit it, it's a long list! It can seem daunting (it is, by design), but let's remember how little our discomfort of losing Amazon's services is, when compared to the constant, uninterrupted terror Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem have no choice but to endure. Let's focus on whose side we want to be on: the one of those enabling the genocide or the one of those experiencing it.

Also, we've gotten some promising feedback from people in our comment section on our Instagram @amazon_blackout - for many people, life hasn't become harder after deleting Amazon.

Want to do more?

Amazon is a giant. More than that, it's a kraken, wrapping its slimy tentacles around everything that could conceivably increase its profit and influence.

What we are asking is that you delete your Amazon account.

But it doesn't stop there.

When you close your main account, it will also close your Kindle and Audible (look for alternatives from your local library!) and Prime Video (honestly, what even is on there thats worth the money?)

Additional steps you should take to really become Amazon-free and making the BlackOut more impactful

  • Delete your Twitch account (I know this one is hard, but reach out to creators for alternatives)
  • Are you using cloud storage? There's a good chance it's hosted by Amazon. Dropbox is one of them, unfortunately.
  • Do you own a website or plan to? - Check if your server is owned by Amazon (AWS), and if so migrate to another Hosting Service.

And if you want to be really thorough: this isn't a comprehensive list, but it shows all companies we could find that are owned by Amazon, which you might be a consumer of:

  • Whole Foods (groceries)
  • MGM (Metro-Goldwin-Mayer) (film studio)
  • One medical (healthcare)
  • Zoox (self-driving vehicles)
  • Zappos (clothes)
  • Ring (security cam)
  • PillPack (online pharmacy)
  • Kiva (robotics)
  • Souq.com (e-commerce)
  • Blink (video monitoring)
  • Goodreads (Review-website)
